Patients get hearing tests in Zambia, where there are only 5 ear, nose and throat specialists and 1 audiologist for 17 million people.
With support from the World Health Organization (WHO), nurses from 92 health facilities across the country, like the ones pictured here, have undergone training on ear examination and services. More than 15,000 people have already been reached with interventions to prevent, identify and address hearing loss.
Challenges to provide quality ear and hearing care are a growing concern around the world. 1 in 5 people live with hearing loss, 80% of whom are in low-and middle-income countries. Yet, many of the causes of that condition are preventable. Safeguarding against loud sounds, good ear care practices and immunization are key for hearing protection.
