Turn on the local radio in Kinshasa and you just might hear Central African refugee rapper Esatis's song.
“I wanted to release a song to draw attention to refugees and Congolese people and at the same time promote COVID-19 prevention measures. I feel it is my duty to be in solidarity with my compatriots and my host country.”
The 25-year-old is pictured recording the song, Be-Afrika, in a studio in the suburbs of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Esatis composed the song with a Congolese artist with support from UNHCR. He recorded in both the Sango language of the Central African Republic (CAR) and in French. Both versions have been released on local radio.
As the coronavirus has spread, so has misinformation. While some in the DRC express fears about the virus, there are others who do not believe that the virus exists or poses a threat.
The song uses popular culture and entertainment to inform people about the disease and solutions to prevent contracting and spreading it.
