When Buky Williams was a child, education was a “no-brainer.” Social change was a constant topic of conversation at home.
“I've always been passionate about these issues. Education was a principle.”
Years later, Buky is spreading those family values nationwide.
Buky is a Malala Fund Education Champion and the executive director of Education As a Vaccine Nigeria, advocating for youth rights in sexual health and education. With her Malala Fund grant, Buky’s primary focus is ensuring education is truly free and accessible for girls in Kaduna State — and that involves tackling social norms.
“Part of the social contract, is that we do not believe that women and girls are deserving of education.”
To Buky, it’s not enough to support girls’ education because it’s good for the economy or improves public health.
“The truth behind the matter is that she deserves an education because she's human.”
