In 2016, women from rural villages in Madagascar volunteered to follow a six-month course in India with the NGO Barefoot Collage International, in order to become solar engineers. During this time, they learned how to istall, maintain and repair a system of small solar panels. The women from the project now teach their skills to women from other villages.
These women are supporting both their communities and the environment. In Madagascar, around 94% of rural areas do not have access to electricity. People are forced to use inefficient energy sources such as kerosene lamps, batteries or firewood to get lightning.
