Wangari Muta Maathai was a Kenyan politician and environmentalist.
Wangari Maathai was a Nobel Laureate of many firsts: the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree, the first female professor in Kenya and the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Born on this day, she was a committed
environmentalist and founded the Green Belt Movement which led to the planting of millions of trees.
