Prior to the World Leaders’ summit, Greenpeace Japan with ATO4NEN group and Fridays for Future Japan demanded Japanese government to slash greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions calling for urgent climate measures and submitted 168,157 petitions.
Influencers Lillian Ono and Eri who are leading the Peaceful Climate Strike (Peaceful Climate Strike Tokyo) also joined the action with Greenpeace in front of the national Parliament building, calling for the Japanese government to shift to a renewable energy future.
Japan is the world’s 3rd largest economy and the 5th largest GHG emitter, but has been highlighted as a climate laggard as the only G7 country still building coal power plants domestically.
Unfortunately, Prime Minister Suga’s announcement yesterday of raising the country’s 2030 emissions reduction target to only 46% is extremely inadequate. The chorus of voices demanding Japan to raise its climate ambition is undeniable. It’s time for Japan to take the meaningful steps to achieve Net-Zero by 2050.
