Meet Um Maher

Um Maher is a Palestine refugee living in Gaza's Nuseirat camp. She receives support from UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestine refugees.

“My mother told me that my oldest brother carried me on his shoulders when we were forced to leave our village in 1948."

"I grew up, got married and raised all my children in this camp. Now, my memories keep me alive. Sometimes, UNRWA food assistance was all we had to eat. It helped us to make it through."

Established in 1949, UNRWA provides assistance and protection for more than 5 million Palestine refugees. Their vital work providing education, health care and emergency assistance has continued even throughout the COVID-19 crisis.
