On 25 March 1965, thousands of people joined the last leg of the historic Selma to Montgomery marches, peacefully demonstrating for African Americans' right to vote. The march was led by Martin Luther King Jr, pictured here centre. He was joined by other civil rights activists including John Lewis, Ralph Abernathy, Coretta Scott King and his fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ralph Bunche, here pictured left of King, and wearing a white shirt.

Approximately 25,000 marchers reached the capitol in Montgomery, Alabama on the last day of the march where King delivered his 'How Long, Not Long?' speech. On 6 August, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed.
