At 5 years old, Jennifer Sebasigari and her family fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo from Burundi due to war and political turmoil in the Great Lakes region.

When she was sick and needed to receive care, she had to walk for miles to make it to the hospital.

While living in a refugee camp, she helped sell the chapati dish that her mother made for other refugees. Eventually, she took over the cooking and started making meals for her friends and family in the camp.

With UNHCR’s support, her family was resettled to Austin, Texas in 2001. Since then, her love for cooking has only intensified. She created her own business, 𝐉𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐲𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐠𝐨𝟑𝟔𝟓, a culinary service that provides catering services, private chef, food media, and more.

Her dream is to become a Michelin star chef one day, but she hopes to use her story every day to inspire other young people to believe in themselves and conquer challenges that they face.
